The book takes place during the 19 years before the events of the first novel in 2000-2001 and addresses a period in which Lord Voldemort was at large, but his identity remained unknown to most people. The book begins with Hermonie Granger, a young witch turned Muggle. After being chased down by Muggles, she hides with her 'Muggle-born' sisters at their family home, Burrow. A few days later, Molly Weasley dies in a car accident that the Grangers were involved in at the time. Hermonie and her family go to live with her grandmother and aunt while Harry Potter is sent to live with his aunt and uncle for the summer holidays. After having trouble adjusting to his new environment he discovers that he has been made a 'Hogwarts' scholarship student and is moved into Gryffindor Tower along with Hermione Granger who he becomes friends with while attending school. When they arrive in Hogwarts, Harry learns that there are enemies of Voldemort already at work within the castle. Among these enemies is a mysterious boy named Draco Malfoy who will eventually become one of Harry's most trusted allies. The story takes a dramatic turn when a memory from Harry's first year is added to the Black family's manor house, and a letter arrives from Sirius Black, the Godfather of Ron Weasley. In it, Sirius tells them that Voldemort was not the only Death Eater working against him back then. He also revealed that Voldemort had been tormenting their son Tom Riddle as well as other boys for years until he finally decided to take his revenge on two Muggle boys James and Lily Potter.
